Simple steps to increase health and longevity

Hello there, 

I just spent the day at a really interesting conference about the immune system and the mind-body connection. There is so much I want to share. The lecture was supplemented with study after study and graph after graph of scientific proof of how our sustained stress levels can negatively affect our health.

But. We already knew that!

I was struck by how the research based interventions that most strongly counter the effects of stress were very familiar.

In some ways I guess that is great because we know what we need to do and on the surface it’s not that complicated.

But part of me wanted something easier, newer and fresher.😂

But, alas here is a quick reminder of some of the best ways to counter ongoing stress and stay healthy. (Adapted from slides by Sally Dickerson PhD.)

Get preventative health care (go to your regular physicals and do screening tests.)

Don’t smoke, drink cautiously (I like that wording.)

Eat an anti-inflammatory diet (high veggies and fruits and low in processed foods.)

Exercise and stay active- yoga, tai chi and walking shown in multiple studies to be great and sustainable.

SLEEP! SLEEP! SLEEP!

And to live even longer:

Foster strong social ties with people who truly support you and you could go to if you needed help.

Get a pet. (Science says it’s a good idea!)

Reduce stress – journaling, cultivate gratitude, be mindful.

I added aromatherapy,  tapping, time in nature, and laughing! 

(I know these seem so simple, but they really move the needle and make your life healthier, happier and longer!)

Meditate and find meaning.

Sure these things require commitment and persistence, but they are accessible and mostly not expensive. 

I just want to remind you not only to try and be aware of stress and how it affects you but also to integrate in  some of these techniques to improve your health, your resilience and to give you a happier longer life. 

Maybe just add one thing each month, no matter if it is small.

Little things add up and can make a big difference.
