Making Salves and Oils

Digging up Comfrey Root from the garden

Today I harvested Comfrey root for a Healing Salve that I make every year.  This year’s roots are big and healthy.  I chop them up, they are slimy and mucilaginous (sticky)-reasons why this plant has been used for throughout history to help to soothe and heal the skin. Comfrey is easy to grow. I dug up a grandmother of this plant from the Community Gardens in Burlington Vermont when we lived there 20 years ago and have transplanted it with me wherever we moved! Now I have a sturdy patch that doesn’t mind me harvesting some roots every year for salve.

Chopped Comfrey Root
Once the roots are cleaned and cut up I place them in a pan and cover them with Extra Virgin Olive Oil, which is also amazing for the skin.  I heat the pan in low oven for a couple of hours. This makes an infused oil which I then use as an ingredient in my salves.
When I make my Balsam infused oil and St Johnswort infused oil, instead of cooking them on low, I pack the plant leaves/needles/flowers into a sterilized mason jar and pour the oil over it all, letting it sit for a couple on months which allows the oil to be infused with the healing properties of the plant.
Decanting Balsam Massage Oil
I choose to gently cook the Comfrey root instead of letting it steep in the oil because it is so thick and dense it can be difficult to extract the healing properties from the plant without it spoiling. Low heat cooking is the best way I’ve found to get potent healing oils from the root. For the Healing Comfrey Salve I then add some delicious beeswax and some coconut oil. Yum. It smells so good when I cook this up! I add a little vitamin E for skin healing and as a mild and natural preservative.
I also add in the flower essence Self-heal which increases the potency of healing in the salve. And all Crow Lady Healing products are put on my Reiki crystal grid to get energized with healing energy as well!
Beeswax!
I have such fun making these products I just wanted to let you in on the making the Comfrey Healing Salve and share a bit on the infused Balsam and St johnswort Oils.  I’ll be decanting and bottling these up in the coming weeks.  For those of you that are local I’ll be at the Franklin Medical Center Craft Fair again this year Dec 4th (my birthday!) from 8am-4pm.  I also can get items to you if you are far away or can’t make it to the craft fair. Let me know what you’d like and we can set up a plan to get it to you! I also have one or two times this season where I could host an Aromatherapy Party, which involves me coming to your home, doing a fun interactive session on Aromatherapy and then having items available to sell. It’s low pressure and fun and the hostess gets a nice goodie bag!
